Like Bush’s War Czar Plan? Then Thank Newt Gingrich

April 13, 2007 | Permalink

Czar IvanPresident Bush’s quest for a “war czar” to take over operations in Iraq and Afghanistan reflect the administrative ideas of Newt Gingrich. Several weeks ago, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich sent an 18-point proposal on dealing with Iraq to the White House; one of these points called for the creation of a war czar. In an interview with the Washington Post yesterday, Gingrich said the following about the position:

“The slowness and ineffectiveness of the American bureaucracy is a major hindrance to our winning, and they’ve got to cut through it”

Despite the fact that the administration has been unable to find someone to take the job, most people recognize it as a good (belated) idea. Things like this can only help Newt, especially with conservatives (so long as he doesn’t get tied to the administration).
