Paul Simon and Chris Dodd, Buddies From Their Diplomatic Journey To Czechoslovakia

July 6, 2007 | Permalink

I should make this clear right up top: Paul Simon and Chris Dodd met when the two of them, as part of a delegation that also included John McCain and Lorne Michaels, went to oversee the first free election in the history of Czechoslovakia, when Vaclev Havel was elected President of the newly free country.

The hilarious Czechoslovakian story aside (and it’s even funny beyond the jokes Simon made), this is the situation the Dodd campaign is in. He’s had little attention paid to him in one debate (CNN), odd and off the wall questions in another (MSNBC), and was stuck behind Mike Gravel for every answer in the third (PBS). He’s been in Congress for basically three decades, and has a hard time cracking one percent in the polls, even though he compares favorably to John Kerry, the 2004 nominee.
The Front Line of American Diplomacy
Will this help? Probably not. Dodd isn’t known for anything in particular, and running against the top 3 in this election would be hard for anybody. Barring a massive collapse of candidates in front of him, it’s hard to see Dodd’s fortunes really changing in time.

Although I give Dodd credit for working as hard as anyone else this week to prove guys like me wrong.

I’m rooting for Dodd - He’s the only one of the Democrats who “feels” Presidential (Biden, with foot in his mouth, comes in a distant second). Unfortunately, though, it’s been the “Hillary & Obama Variety Hour” with the MSM ever since the start.

Got something to say?
