Some background on Kosovo declaring independence here and here. The statements of Clinton and Obama really reflect very different approaches and concerns over the issue. We’ll be discussing this a bit in our next podcast.
Clinton:
I welcome the historic declaration of Kosova independence issued today in Pristina. I urge our friends and allies and around the world to join the United States and European Union countries in promptly recognizing an independent Kosova.
This is a historic step that will allow the people of Kosova to finally live in their own democratic state. It will allow Kosova and Serbia to finally put a difficult chapter in their history behind them and to move forward. Resolving this issue has taken too long and has held both of these proud peoples back from pursuing a better European and Euro-Atlantic future. It is time now for all of us to look ahead and to focus on the challenge of building an independent Kosova and supporting a democratic Serbia in an integrated Europe.
I want to underscore the need to avoid any violence or provocations in the days and weeks ahead. Kosovars and Serbs have seen too much violence and too many provocations in the past. It is time to focus on improving the lives of people living in both countries and the integration of these countries into the West.
In recognizing the independence of Kosova, I want to stress the high importance that I attach to full protection of the rights of all minorities in Kosova, especially the Serbs, and to safeguard Serbian cultural and religious heritage sites in Kosova. The international community must stand firm on these points.
I remain concerned about the deterioration of the situation in neighboring Bosnia and urge the Bush Administration to pay more attention to this issue, so that it does not once again become a major threat to European stability.
I regret that is has taken so long for us to reach this historic juncture and that the Bush Administration has not always given the issues of Kosova, Serbia’s democratic future, and the Balkans the attention they deserve. This has helped contribute to the complicated and risky situation on the ground in the Balkans that we still face today. I look forward to working with the democratic leaders in this region and will once again make the full integration of the Western Balkans into Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community the priority it should be.

Sphere: Related ContentToday’s announcement of independence by the leadership of Kosovo ends a chain of events that began with the bloody break-up of the former Yugoslavia. Kosovo’s independence is a unique situation resulting from the irreparable rupture Slobodan Milosevic’s actions caused; it is in no way a precedent for anyone else in the region or around the world.
Kosovo’s independence carries with it important responsibilities. The international community has devoted enormous resources to Kosovo’s political, economic and social development for nearly a decade, with results not always meeting expectations. I hope that Kosovo’s government and people act with urgency to ensure that Kosovo becomes a positive example of democratic governance and the rule of law. All the people of Kosovo, be they of Albanian, Serb or other origin, must be able to live in a free, tolerant and prosperous society where minority rights and religious sites are fully protected, and the people of Kosovo have a stake in one another’s success.
Serbia and its people have also suffered terribly over the past two decades. Serbs deserve a more peaceful, prosperous, and hopeful future. This month’s re-election of President Boris Tadic was a critical step in moving Serbia closer to the goal of full integration into the democratic West, including membership in Euro-Atlantic institutions that can help bring more stability and prosperity to the people of Serbia. Serbia ultimately belongs in the European Union. The EU and Serbia should rapidly deepen their ties, a move that would help demonstrate to the Serb people that they are indeed genuinely part of the West.
I honor the service of all Americans, military and civilian, who have worked so hard to bring peace to the Balkans. The United States must continue to work with our European allies on behalf of the security and prosperity of the entire region. I am convinced that, with our support, Serbia and Kosovo can emerge as models of democratic and economic growth, and their people can know a bright future.
Mr. Obama please oppose the Kosovo’s decleration of indepandance since this will cause more problems in the Balkans. Serbian people have suffred in Kosovo same way Blacks are still being discriminated in USA. This is a country that should provide an example to other countries worldwide, since this is a wealthiest nation in the world, but yet its own people are being discriminated.
Mr Obama didn’t say anything about breaking some important international laws in Kosovo matter!I only hope that he will respect and protect the laws in the future!

It’s shocking that the only suffering mentioned by Senator Obama is that of the Serbs, when most of the victims of the Balkan wars of the 1990’s, by far, were non-Serbs killed by Serbs.
I find it a bit surprising that all the comments so far focus on Obama’s response. Poor Clinton… Doesn’t anyone care (one way or another) what she thinks??? Maybe the reason for this apparent disinterest is that her statement has a bland, nicely pre-cooked feel to it, while his is just the distracted erratic mess one would expect from someone who’s more concerned about other matters. He better shape up, or he’ll be someone’s lunch soon.
Abraham Lincoln was fond of asking the rhetorical question: "If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Five? No, calling a tail a leg don’t make it a leg." That pretty much sums up the recent unilateral declaration of independence by Albanian Muslims in the Serbian province of Kosovo. Several countries, disgracefully led by the United States, have recognized Kosovo. Major media have hailed creation of the "world’s newest country." But calling Kosovo a country doesn’t make it one. Senator Obama I urge you,please reconsider your position!
OBAMA must support Serbia’s efforts to have one country just like OBAMA must support Kenya’s efforts to have one country. Law, order and respect are important. Allowing Albanians to split off from Serbia will divide the BALKANS. Ethnic minorities should not be allowed to split off with American support. KOSOVO is a part of Serbia and KOSOVO will always be part of Serbia!!
Future President Obama, You are a man of much intellect, strength, integrity, and honor. You voted in a very intense time in our country with all of our biases to oppose the Iraq war despite of what people would say or imply due to your history. You are someone I pray will lead our country in the right direction which we have not been in in more than 15 years. Bush Sr. labeled the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) as a terrorist organization. Despite Serbia’s history in supporting the US in 2 world wars, the Clinton administration with the bias of Albright (who was married & divorced to a Serbian man and holds great bias against the Serbs) chose to support all parties except the Serbs and they have suffered so greatly as a result. These are a proud people just like us here who are trying to secure their borders. I beg of you to look at the history of Serbia and Yugoslavia - Kosovo a part of that. They same situation could happen in parts of Texas, California, Arizona, etc if borders were left open for years. Los Angeles could be 90% hispanic - would we allow an indepent Los Angeles? Please show the world we repect nations and Sovereignty.
I read all this nonsense opposing Kosovo’s Declaration of Independence by choosing sides between Clinton and Obama. I think both candidates are satisfied with a new European state, Republic of Kosovo, because they generally believe that it will provide stability in Balkans, leaving the politics of Serbian aggression behind. I do not think their views are that different! I think experience speaks for itself. I can see why Senator Obama does not ignore Serbia’s loss of Kosovo. That’s because of his empathy towards the good citizens of Serbia. Unfortunately, he does not recognize that racism among Serbian people against Albanians and other ethnicities still exists and it could lead to more conflicts if independence was not given under the supervision of the international community. That’s the awareness and experience that Senator Clinton has at her advantage at this political debate which is being bombarded in this website by Serbian propagandas of juxtaposing the experience of Serbians with that of African-American. Again, this is nonsense. Serbians were the ones who discriminated against Albanians for centuries. And if looking back at the history of praising Kosovo as the “heartland of Serbia” by bringing back the anti-Ottoman wars of 14th century, we also have to treat with respect the inherited and ancient history of Kosovo as the “heartland” for Albanians who never invaded and lived there for centuries before Serbians moved into Balkans.

Kosovo deserved the independence just like Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia, and Montenegro. Serbia already caused the wars in 1990s in 4 countries. Do not forget 10,000 people in Kosovo were killed by the Serbs. Do not forget that the Serbs in the recent protests waved pictures of Karadzic and Mladic. Do not forget that the Serbs burned the American flags (American flag symbolized freedom, peace and liberty to the world countries that enjoy freedom). Kosovars are already starting to build their future toward a democratic and prosperous country. Cheers!
The independence of Kosovo is the most ridiculous situation that has come about, not only in the Balkans, but in the entire world.
Simply put, would it make sense of the U.S .created another country in the U.S? . . Country in country? No! Typing it sounds ridiculous more or less thinking about it. Kosovo is the Jerusalem of the Serbs, that is where their Orthodox-Christian faith originated from.
You rarely, if ever hear about the atrocities that Serbs have gone through (i-e- burning of monasteries dating back from the 16th century; Serbs being kicked out of their own houses; soldiers heads being cut off) They are second class citizens in their own home.
Most, if not all of those people in the Kosovo Parliament are terrorists, not ‘rebels’. . Terrorists who belonged to KLA, ONA, UCK, and other little Mickey Mouse ‘liberation groups.’ Albanians have their own motherland, Albania, now they want Kosovo, parts of Macedonia, I am sure Greece will come into play as well.
It’s time to wake up and look outside of the box. Mr. Obama, Sandra made a great point about Los Angeles above.
I respect everyone, regardless of their nationality or up bringing, so long as they are good people.
It is a shame that countries decided to recognize Kosovo. However, the majority of the world is split on the whole situation.

Kosovo Albanians and Kosovo Serbs have suffered for long time. They have a hard problem to deal with in the future.
Please, if you can’t help them resolve the problem with some great genious ideas, do not draw them into more violence and wars. By recognizing unilateraly proclaimed independance, you are taking sides in the conflict. And that is really not helping resolve anything. It is imposing of a solution by force, and economic pressures. That will not work, as any other force never worked, and that you yourself Mr. Obama are opposing to.
I am one of those your supporters, who started to reconsider my support to you after this last statement. Think of it again, try to be cool as you usually are, and invest some of your own thoughts and research into your words.
Unfotunately comments like Abdeulleh left on this website offer the typical response the Albanians have had with regards to Serbs. Get the hell out. And that is exactly what will heppen to Serbs in the newly independent state of Kosovo. I am not just speaking as an ethnic Serb, but as an American who has travelled to Kosovo on numerous occasions on behalf of my government. What I have seen is deplorable. Serbs live in enclaves which look more like Ghettos. I have spoken to 80 year old women who cant go to the store without UNMIK accompanying them in an armored vehichle. So I actually dont see a difference between Obama and Clinton’s campaign statements. They both speak to protecting Serbs rights. The only problem is that Mrs. Clinton and her husbands administratijon did not do that. I am hoping that Senator Obama takes this responsibility seriously if he is elected because if the situation is left unchecked, Albanian racism and hatred will turn on the remaining Serbs on the province and drive them out.
I also have to say that I am deeply ashamed of my country’s recognition of Kosovo as a country. Even if one is to believe that ethnic atrocities were only committed by Serbs in Kosovo (the truth is quite to the contrary), I still dont see how that creates a precedent for the creation of a new nation. Did we split Rwanda in half. Should we split Abkhazia from Georgia or Ossetia? There are a million new states we could create using this theory.
I agree with the many posters here that the US violated international law by recognizing Kosovo. I have great hope however that Senator Obama, if he is elected will respect international law, even though we are the mightiest nation in the world. I am confident that he will.

1389—Ottoman Turks defeat Christian Serb defenders in Kosovo, depopulate the region and resettle Kosovo with Muslim Albanians to take over pillaged Serbian land.
1878—Albanian leaders meet in Prizren at the First League of Prizren and announce a Greater Albania includeding Kosovo-Metohija, western Macedonia, southern Montenegro, and northern Greece.
WW1 – Serbia = Allies / Kosovo Albanians = Germany and Austro-Hungary
1900-1918—Austria-Hungary and Italy sponsor a Greater Albania support Albanian expansion in the Balkans. Kosovo Albanians ally on the side of Germany and A-H.
1912—Albanians seize Skopje in Macedonia as part of a Greater Albania.
1920—In post WW1 Serbia, Albanian separatists launch a terrorist insurgency “kachak” in Kosovo, murdering Serbian civilians and police.
1941—Hitler and Mussolini invade, occupy, and dismember Yugoslavia. Kosovo and W. Macedonia is now part of a Greater Albania under Mustafa Kruja.
1943—The Second League of Prizren, sponsored by Nazi Germany, reaffirms the commitment to create and maintain an independent “Kosova” and a Greater Albania under Nazi sponsorship.
1944—Albanians create Waffen SS Division, Skanderbeg, made up of Kosovo Albanian Muslim,. These Albanian SS troops murder thousands of Serbian Christians and drive thousands of other Serbs out of Kosovo.
1944— The Albanian Skanderbeg SS Division rounds up Kosovo Jews who are sent to the Nazi concentration camp at Bergen Belsen.
1948—The U.S. sponsors Midhat Frasheri, the leader of the Nazi/fascist Balli Kombetar, National Front, whose goal is a Greater Albania that includes Kosovo, and other wanted Albanian war criminals, such as Xhafer Deva and Hassan Dosti, to the U.S. to form anti-Communist forces for the takeover of Albania.
1951—The U.S. launches Operation Fiend, an experiment in “regime change” in Albania. Frank Wisner is one of the leaders of the project. His son would lead the efforts in 2006 to create a Greater Albania, an independent “Kosova”, which his father failed to achieve.
1969—Kosovo Albanians begin closer ties with Tirana and begin importing textbooks and teachers from Albania to create their own Albanian school system and university. The “Albanianization” of Kosovo begins.
1974—The Communist dictator Josip Broz Tito changes Yugoslav constitution gives Kosovo Albanians control of Kosovo.
1981—Albanians in Kosovo demand independence. Their motto: “We Want a Unified Albania!” Serbian Patriarchate in Pec is burned down but no one knows how or why.
1982—British historian Nora Beloff notes that “ethnic cleansing” originated in Kosovo when Albanian Muslims begin terror campaign of ethnic cleansing against Kosovo Serbs. From 1981-1989, an estimated 20,000 Kosovo Serbs are driven out of Kosovo.
1982—Ethnically motivated murders of Kosovo Serbs begin with the murders of Kosovo Serbs Danilo Milincic and Miodrag Saric.
1985—Kosovo Serb Djorje Martinovic is “found with a broken bottle up his anus.” US media claims that Martinovic was a closet homosexual who injured himself. The brutal sodomy of Martinovic inflames passions in the rest of Serbia.
1987—Fadil Hoxha, leader of Kosovo Albanians, advocates that Albanian Muslims rape Kosovo Serb women.
1989—Murders, rapes, desecration of Kosovo Serbian property, churches, and cemeteries forces Serbian government to rescind “autonomy” that Communist dictatorship created.
1991—Albanian separatists respond by proclaiming Kosovo a republic, recognized only by neighboring Albania. Albanian separatists gain sponsorship of a Greater Albania by contributing money to Thomas Lantos, Robert Dole, and Joe Biden. The U.S. becomes the sponsor of Greater Albania.
1996—A violent and armed terrorist and separatist group emerges, the KLA/UCK, whose goal is to create a Greater Albania, an independent “Kosova”. The KLA begins killing Kosovo Serb civilians and police. Dozens of Yugoslav policemen, Serbs and Albanians, are brutally murdered by the KLA.
April, 1998—95 percent of the Yugoslav population reject international mediation on Kosovo in a referendum. The so-called Balkan Contact Group imposed new sanctions against Yugoslavia.
July-August, 1998—The KLA terrorists takes over 40 % of Kosovo by force, killing Yugoslav police and driving Kosovo Serbs out. The KLA terrorist groups are well armed and supplied.
1998—US State Department declares the KLA as “terrorists”.
1998—US media dismiss the fact that the Kosovo conflict is an illegal land grab, a separatist, and ethnic war to create a Greater Albania. Instead, the US media concoct a deception that the conflict is about “greater rights” and “genocide”, when it is about Greater Albania, an independent, ethnically pure “Kosova”.
January 15, 1999—A “massacre” manufactured in Racak by the US media and government. In fact, those killed were KLA separatists who had murdered Serbian policemen and had been killed in combat against Yugoslav police.
February, 1999—At Rambouillet, the US demands that Serbia allow Kosovo to become an independent nation after three years and that US and NATO troops be allowed to occupy Serbia.
March, 1999—The Serbs reject the US peace deal as tantamount to dismemberment and military occupation, unacceptable to a sovereign state.
March 24, 1999—NATO launched air strikes against Yugoslavia for 78 days, killing thousands of Serbian civilians. The bombings create a humanitarian catastrophe forcing all of Kosovo’s inhabitants to flee. Yugoslav forces are blamed for driving out Albanians.
June 10, 1999— NATO Secretary General Javier Solana calls off airstrikes. UN Security Council passes Resolution UNR 1244 guaranteeing that Kosovo stays and integral part of Serbia and Yugoslavia’s acceptance of a political deal, including an immediate end to violence and a rapid withdrawal of its military, police and paramilitary forces.
July 10, 1999 Kosovo placed under UN administration, the resolution also authorizes the establishment of UNMIK and the deployment of a NATO-led peacekeeping force (KFOR).
June 12, 1999—Since 1999 over 200,000 Kosovo Serbs, Roma, Gorani, and Jews are forced out of Kosovo by Albanians. Thousands of Kosovo Serbs are murdered by Albanians as NATO takes control of the province. Over 150 Serbian Orthodox Churches are destroyed by Albanian Muslims.
March, 2004—March Pogroms: Albanians attack the last remaining Kosovo Serbs to drive them out of the province to create an ethnically pure Shqip Kosova.
October, 2006—Serbia holds a referendum approving a new constitution that declares Kosovo as an integral part of Serbia.
April, 2007—Russia rejected the Marti Ahtisaari proposal in the U.N. Security Council as it violated Serbian sovereignty by supporting Albanian separatism.
June, 2007—U.S. President George W. Bush claims that Kosovo had to be independent "sooner rather than later."
August, 2007—Envoys from the U.S., EU and Russia began 120 days of further negotiations between Albanian separatists and the Serbian government in order to reach an agreement. No agreement was forthcoming because the only “agreement” was the U.S. pushing was an independent “Kosova”.
December, 2007—Albanian separatists fail at the U.N. Albanians decide to unilaterally declare independence outside of international law and the UN Charter, which is illegal and violates the sovereignty of Serbia and denies the will of the majority of Serbs. The majority of the Serbian population rejects the secession of Kosovo by Albanian separatists. This decision is reached by means of the democratic process.
February, 2008—Having failed to achieve their separatist agenda through international law and in the U.N., the U.S. switches gears and tells Albanian separatists to unilaterally declare an independent “Kosova”.

The first step in moving forward and towards peace is accepting the truth. and working towards repairing relations and cultures within the Balkans, not controlling and suppressing others because of their ethnic background of religious beliefs. New leadership is upon us, in Serbia as well as Kosova, a new country, which never really belonged to serbia, nor ever will again be under its rule. The massacres in Kosovo and elsewhere speak for themselves.. you can deny it as much as you like, but the evidence speaks for itself (mass burials, massacres of civilians and children in Kosova as well as Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia…) The possiblity of all these different cultures and people making all this up is ridiculous. It seems that the only propaganda that i see, is what you have listed above. ironically its the Serbians whom seem to be hidden behind the metaphoric iron curtain, seeing only what they want, and denying the rest exists. 1. Serbs started World War I (assasination of Archduke Ferdinand), and World War II being a direct result of World War I, makes the Serbs responsible for TWO WORLD WARS!! 2. I really don’t understand why some countries think that Kosovars don’t deserve their independence. They’ve suffered so much for many, many years. They deserve freedom.
CONGRESSIONAL RECORD: April 12, 1999 IF NATO HAS ITS WAY, ALBANIAN KOSOVARS WILL NOT REMAIN PART OF SERBIA ———— Prior to NATO’s expanding the war in Yugoslavia, approximately 2,000 deaths in the past year were recorded in Kosovo. As a consequence of NATO’s actions, the killing has now escalated and no one can hardly be pleased just because now Serbs, our once-valiant allies against the Nazis, are dying. Those who are motivated by good intentions while ignoring facts cannot be excused for the escalating and dangerous crisis in Yugoslavia.The humanitarian concerns for Albanian refugees is justified, but going to war because of emotional concerns while ignoring other millions of refugees around the world only stirs the passions of the oppressed, whether they are Kurds, Palestinians, Tibetans, East Timorans or Rwandans. When NATO talks of returning Albanians to their homes in Kosovo, I wonder why there is no reference or concern for the more than 50,000 Serbs thrown out of their homes in Bosnia, Slovenia and Croatia. Current NATO policy in Yugoslavia will surely encourage more ethnic minorities around the world to revolt and demand independence.Quite ironically, ethnic diversity will surely be the casualty of all of this mischief. NATO and the U.S. are co-conspirators and military allies of a Serbian province that is seeking to become a separate ethnic country. Let there be no doubt, if NATO has its way, Albanian Kosovars will not remain part of Serbia.

In the spring 1999, the United States bombed Serbia for 78 days to force its army out of that nation’s cradle province of Kosovo. The Serbs were fighting Albanian separatists of the Kosovo Liberation Army, or KLA. And we had no more right to bomb Belgrade than the Royal Navy would have had to bombard New York in our Civil War. We bombed Serbia, we were told, to stop the genocide in Kosovo. But there was no genocide. This was propaganda. The United Nations’ final casualty count of Serbs and Albanians in Slobodan Milosevic’s war did not add up to 1 percent of the dead in Mr. Lincoln’s war. Albanians did flee in the tens of thousands during the war. But since that war’s end, the Serbs of Kosovo have seen their churches and monasteries smashed and vandalized and have been ethnically cleansed in the scores of thousands from their ancestral province. In the exodus, they have lost everything. The remaining Serb population of 120,000 is largely confined to enclaves guarded by NATO troops. “At a Serb monastery in Pec,” writes the Washington Post, “Italian troops protect the holy site, which is surrounded by a massive new wall to shield elderly nuns from stone-throwing and other abuse by passing ethnic Albanians.” On Sunday, Kosovo declared independence and was recognized by the European Union and President Bush. But this is not the end of the story. It is only the preface to a new history of the Balkans, a region that has known too much history.By intervening in a civil war to aid the secession of an ancient province, to create a new nation that has never before existed and, to erect it along ethnic, religious and tribal lines, we have established a dangerous precedent. Muslim and Albanian extremists are already talking of a Greater Albania, consisting of Albania, Kosovo and the Albanian-Muslim sectors of Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. Six Arrested in New Jersey Islamic Terror Plot
Six men from New Jersey have been arrested in an alleged terror plot against soldiers at Fort Dix, according investigators.
Investigators said the men planned to use automatic weapons to enter Fort Dix and kill as many soldiers as they could at the N.J. base. Fort Dix was just one of several military and security locations allegedly scouted by this group, authorities said.
According to WPVI, the six men attempted to purchase fully automatic AK-47s from an arms dealer working with the FBI. WABC describes the six men as all being ethnic Albanians. Their immigration status was not clear from news accounts. WCAU notes that the men traveled from South Jersey to the Pocano mountains “to practice firing automatic weapons.” If accurate, this means that investigators allowed the men to obtain the fully automatic AK-47s before affecting an arrest

By pledging his support of Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia, President George W. Bush has sanctioned the genocide of thousands of Serbian Christians in the Balkans and the creation, thanks to al Qaeda, of a radical Muslim state at the doorway to Europe.
BIN LADEN IN THE BALKANS
To aid in the struggle for independence, the ethnic Albanians turned to Osama bin Laden and the mujahadeen. Muslim warriors from Chechnya, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia traveled in droves to Kosovo. By 1995, more than sixty thousand holy warriors, including members of al Qaeda, had made their way to the Balkans to prepare for the struggle against Milosevic and the Christian Serbs.
Bin Laden visited the area three times between 1994 and 1996. In the wake of these visits, al Qaeda training camps popped up in Zenica in Bosnia and Malisevo and Mitrovica in Kosovo; elaborate command and control centers were set up in Croatia, Macedonia, and Bulgaria; and a central headquarters for the mujahadeen was established in Tropje, Albania, on the property of Sali Betisha, the former Albanian premier.
In addition, Bin Laden provided seven hundred million dollars to establish the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The purpose of the KLA was to drive Christian Serbs from Kosovo, to topple the government of Milosevic, to undermine the peace initiatives of Ibrahim Rugova, and to unite the Muslims of Kosovo, Macedonia, and Albania into the Islamic Republic of Greater Albania.

By 1997, President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Secretary of Defense William Cohen came to view the KLA as “freedom fighters.” Millions in U.S. aid began to flow to the Muslim rebels. America, unbeknown to its citizens, was now in league with the terrorists who were intent upon the destruction of western civilization. Human history, going back to the tree-swinging apes, does not get much crazier than this.
By 1998, the KLA became a formidable army of 30,000 highly trained troops with sophisticated weaponry that included shoulder-launched antitank rocket launchers, mortars, recoilless rifles, and antiaircraft machine guns. From Tropje, the KLA began to conduct hit and run terror attacks throughout Kosovo. They bombed police stations, killed scores of police officers and government workers, and desecrated Christian cemeteries.
Milosevic, in outrage, responded by burning homes and killing dozens of KLA foot soldiers in the Drenica region. A full-scale conflict erupted, culminating in the infamous massacre of January 15, 1999, when the bodies of forty-five ethnic Albanians were discovered in a gully near the small village of Racak.
Confronted with the crime of genocide, Milosevic insisted that the bodies had been planted by the KLA to implicate the Serbs and to justify Western involvement in the conflict. Milosevic’s claims were supported by investigative journalists from Le Figaro and Le Monde, who discovered that the bodies had been placed in un-natural positions; that the site of the so-called “massacre” was devoid of cartridge shells; and that the villagers were unable to identify a single victim.

Substantial evidence has emerged refuting the central justification for NATO’s war against Serbia—the claim that the Milosevic regime was conducting “ethnic genocide” against Albanians in Kosovo.
During the conflict, the NATO powers asserted that somewhere between 100,000 (according to US Defence Secretary William Cohen) and 500,000 (according to an April 1999 statement of the US State Department) Albanian Kosovars had been killed by Serb forces. Such far-fetched claims were already being discounted by the end of the war last June.
But now the much-reduced official estimate of 10,000 Kosovar deaths has been discredited by the results of investigations carried out by the Hague war crimes tribunal and other agencies. Most post-war surveys estimate the actual number of deaths attributable to Serbian forces at less than 2,500. “When you consider that 1,500 civilians or more were killed during NATO bombing, you have to ask whether the intervention was justified.”
The November 3 Toronto Star ran an article by Richard Gwynn that drew the conclusion, “No genocide means no justification for a war inflicted by NATO on a sovereign nation. Only a certainty of imminent genocide could have legally justified a war that was not even discussed by the UN Security Council.”
During the war, the Trepca mining complex, supposedly the hub of Serbian ethnic cleansing operations, was compared in the British press with the Nazi death camps. NATO and the KLA claimed that as many as 1,000 bodies a day had been dropped down the shafts, incinerated or dissolved in hydrochloric acid. In the aftermath of the war, however, investigators surveying the mine complex have found no evidence of executions.
In two trips to Kosovo since the war’s end, the American FBI has found a total of 30 sites containing some 200 bodies. A Spanish team investigating one zone in Kosovo found no mass graves and only 187 bodies, all buried in individual graves. One team member, Emilio Perez Pujol, said,
“There never was a genocide in Kosovo. It was dishonest and wrong for Western leaders to adopt the term in the beginning to give moral authority to the operation.”

Kosova and Serbia are two distinct countries with distinct people and distinct cultures. They should stay that way with Kosova having its own country and people and the same with Serbia. I’ve read so many posts here of people speaking of Kosovars wanting a “greater Albania” well that may be true but as you may (or may not) recall the events of 1999 when Serbian militia officially invaded Kosova and many of its provinces and massacred, raped, and tortured 10,000s of ethnic Albanians most of them being children, women, and the elderly. The Kosovar people have been under Serbian oppresion for decades it’s very humorous and ludicrous to me that the only people defending the Serbs are the Serbs themselves, Macedonians, and the Russians. The rest of the world looks at Serbs as torturous monsters who have started many of the wars up until now (WWI, Bosnia, Kosova). I worked as a journalist in Kosova and Serbia during the 1999 conflict and contrary to Serbian propaganda, Kosovars are not muslim but most are agnostic-meaning they have strong beliefs in God, but they don’t have a strong religion ethic to follow as they were forced into Islam when they were ruled by the Turkish Empire. It’s heart-breaking that after all the bloodshed (mostly suffered by Albanians as any facts will show), heartless, cruel people want to deny them their God-given rights. We are lucky to be in a place like America where everyone has basic rights “that all men are created equal that they are endowed by their creator.” Albanians, until now with their hard work, have never had these rights. Imagine a scence where you watch your loved, dear ones being shot and tortured and raped and murdered and massacred in front of you: Welcome to an Albanian’s daily life. I ask that all of you keep and open mind and although Serbs and Albanians have been angry at eachother for years and decades the truth here is that everyone has the rights to their own sovereign state and their own cultures, religions, and rights.
