Canadian Television Says Obama’s Position on NAFTA is Just Words; Principals Involved Deny

February 28, 2008 | Permalink

Canadian news outlet CTV made a fairly startling report today:

Within the last month, a top staff member for Obama’s campaign telephoned Michael Wilson, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, and warned him that Obama would speak out against NAFTA, according to Canadian sources.

The staff member reassured Wilson that the criticisms would only be campaign rhetoric, and should not be taken at face value.

My thoughts and recent developments …

Obama’s campaign quickly rejected the accusation. As did the Canadian embassy, which said there was no contact whatsoever between them and the campaigns of any candidates.

Of course, the truth behind the story is that absolutely no one is concerned with our relationship with Canada economically as a result of NAFTA. To apparently not paraphrase one candidate, it is almost certainly a boon. The problem is generally with Mexico; although for either Clinton or Obama to say that in the week before the Texas primary would be political suicide.
This Is a Serious Issue? Really?
Also, is it me or is this accusation entirely too similar to the plot of Canadian Bacon?

(Alan Alda played the President in Canadian Bacon … he ran for President against Jimmy Smits in the last season of the west wing … the plot of which was aided through a consultation with Obama advisor David Axelrod. I smell a conspiracy!)
