An Example Of How Weak The GOP Brand Is: Jack Martin’s Strategy In New York’s 4th Congressional District…

August 7, 2008 | Permalink

I am back in New York and I noticed a campaign commercial for the local house race here between incumbent Carolyn McCarthy (D) and challenger Jack Martins (R).  Martins ad puts a twist on the “change” theme while also neglecting to mention that he is a Republican.  Take a look:

I thought this was a bit curious, so I perused his website and it also fails to contain a single reference to Martins being a Republican.

There’s not much to say about this other than to note this as an example of the weakness of the Republican brand during this election cycle.  Additionally, the lack of party identification coupled with the “change” theme gives the impression that Martins is in line with Obama’s Changevolution and McCarthy isn’t.  Subtle and tricksy.

what? Bullshit! I call bullshit! Mineola is a shithole.

I know Jack Martins. Unlike Carolyn (who votes with her party over 98.5% of the time and hasn’t had an original thought in over 10 years) Jack is not about towing the party line. His web site makes over a half dozen remarks critical of the “sit back and do nothing” democratic congress and would vomit at the idea that someone would peg him as another one of the “3 blind mice” democratic club. Interesting that this is labeled a “non-partisan” website.

    Pro-life. Voter. NOBAMA.

No way… I thought I was the only whom thought this guy message was odd. I started digging too… I searched for his biography before I stumble upon your post.

I wonder what else this guy is hiding…

I will be sure to look for McCarthy - at least I know she is not trying to deceive me so openly - come November.

What has McCarthy done during her time in office? Anything? Enough with the status quo already. McCarthy may once have been in touch with her constituents, but she’s become part of the political machine. She has taken very good care of herself, but she hasn’t done a thing for her constituents.

I agree with commenter Mike who states that McCarthy hasn’t had an original thought in over 10 years. Time for a fresh new face, fresh ideas and out with the “politics as usual” mentality.

I recall that Jack Martins bucked the party machine to come to the aid of Mineola in the first place. He comes from a pro business working with labor background. He obviously doesn’t share the views of the right wing of the GOP because he is a traditional conservative.
If you look at the Bush foreign wars, big government and massive spending years, it is no wonder that genuine conservatives do not want to be tied to such lunacy. Waving a flag doesnt make you a patriot, service to country does. Cheering Bush doesnt make you a Republican, promoting the core conservative Republican values does.
It takes a lot of guts to try and unseat Carolyn in this poisoned political climate but I’m convinced it’s because Martins cares more about his district than fighing an uphill battle.

Yeah baby! Thats what I’ve been saying all along. I’m voting for a Democrat in the White House but I make my decisions independently. Jack Martins is whats right for our district, we’re the ones that need a change. You know he’s local, like he was in Mineola, local stuff, local people, local issues. We gotta start thinking local, people! Obama stands for change and I’m with him. I’m going for change right here too, voting for Jack martins!

There a 5 of us arguing in this office about the election. 2 are not from the 4th district. Of the 3 left, one (me) is gop, 1 is obviously dem leaning and the other is our buddy indyvoter. But all of us are going for Martins. I think McCain is proven change. I think Jack Martins is proven change thats why I’m can vote gop across the board. You are seeing a need for change from everyody. McCarthy wants to be a SEVEN TERM SINGLE ISSUE incumbent. We are in an economic crisis, if she hasnt solved the gun problem by now it’s time for her to say goodbye. We all agree it’s time for change, and we never agree on anything.

McCarthy is a total idiot. While our financial system is completely melting down (and she is a senior member on the comittee on financial services), her congressional website is boasting of her accomplishment of passing the “Historic Accounts of the Civil Rights Movement”. She is such a loser. Time for her to go

I happen to live in Mineola and I know Jack Martins, the things he has done in and for Mineola are nothing short of remarkable. Carolyn McCarthy does not represnet her constituents and hasn’t for a long time. She and most of the current crowd of incumbents are doing this country no good. It is time that Washington DC gets a breath of fresh air, and that is exactly what Jack Martins will be. A true civil servant and man of the people NOT a politcian.

    vwc and others,

Why not respond to the subject matter of the post instead of spamming comments? The subject matter of the post was to offer an example of weak GOP branding this cycle. The ad that was being run didn’t include Martins party affiliation.

It’s not exactly a critique of his potential for a congressman or his record. Why don’t you comment on that?

What do YOU think about a Republican running for office not mentioning that he’s a Republican in a tv ad?

If you can’t post something tangentially related to the subject matter of the post, then all you are doing is spamming.

  11. Indyvoter on October 30th, 2008 5:29 pm

On the subject matter.. .In politics it is accepted in Texas that you should wear a cowboy hat on the campaign trail because enough voters could use that as the final determining factor in deciding whether to vote for you. Even if you dont like cowboy hats. Everybody understand that, its unfortunate, but accepted as political reality.
Jack Martins, a hard working, dedicated, traditional Republican would be stupid to think that draping himself in the ruined Republican brand would do him any poitical good amongst the voters in our district while McCarthy, a single issue, do-nothing Dem Congresswoman can simply ride the obvious bad taste Bush/Cheney republicanism has put in peoples mouth. She enjoys reminding us that Jack Martins is a Republican for good reason. It seems this thread was designed to assist her.
If we show up to the polls and make Jack Martins our representative, he will stand firm for our district and his election against an anti Republican tidalwave will return the Republican party to its roots. Electing guys like Martins to Congress will show them what kind of people we want in that party.

More campaign talking points. Nice try though.

Got something to say?
